How it all began
I have realised that I am a multi-tasker, sometimes this is a good thing, but often what it means is my brain tends to flit from one task to another without finishing the first one! Looking at my blog posts so far, I can see that I am straight into flitting from one idea to the next. So have decided it might be good to tell you how ‘Chi-Chi Moi’ started and how we adopted two little ones.
Okay, so first ’Chi-Chi Moi’ way back in the early 2000’s I had graduated from UWE (University West of England) with a degree in Fashion & Textile design. I had been approached by two print agents to create designs at the end of year show, so that is what I did for a couple of years. In 2002 my partner Ben & I bought a cottage which needed renovating, we did not realise just how much needed doing. So any idea’s of creating fabric designs were well and truly put on hold. The cottage took years to renovate and we spent the first 9 months in a caravan, my two children also had their own caravan to live in for a while (both caravans lived on our very small garden, life was crazy). Anyway after around 3 years the cottage was looking much better and I decided to start designing again, however there was not really anywhere for me to work so I started knitting and crocheting, skills I had been taught by my Mum & Great Aunt respectively.
I had forgotton just how much I loved knitting and crochet and began to make small crochet accessories, I was very lucky that a couple of local shop took my work and I was in business! Now for a name….My fabric designs were under my own name, also my paintings, yes I do multi task :) so I wanted something different. My original business name idea was ‘Mabel Candy’ this was my Great Aunt’s name and I liked the idea as she taught me to crochet. My partner said it sounded like a washing machine company, OH how I wished I used it though :( My other idea was ‘Chi-Chi Moi’ I had wondered what ‘Chi-Chi meant and looked it up in an old Thesaurus which said ‘Fashionably Frilly’ Perfect I thought, add ‘Moi’ (Me) All done. People seemed to like the name, but nobody could pronounce it…I say Chee (like the start of cheese) but have had so many variations, Also Delivery men find it really hard to pronounce! Anyway that’s how I got the name.
Now the children. So, fast forward to 2013, my two eldest children Dominic and Milly had both left home (Uni & Working abroad) and Ben suddenly announced that he wanted children in our lives, I must admit I wasn’t sure but we started the adoption process which is quite invasive. Anyway after about 18 months we were approved, April 2015 to be exact. We had a meeting with our social worker and looked at children who were available for adoption (I found this a little strange) on that day there were only two a baby or an 8 year old, we felt neither was quite quite right for us (that’s hard too). The following Monday our social worker phoned to ask if we would consider fostering to adopt, this means that the child/children do not go through the normal ‘here is your New Mummy & Daddy’ process but are placed with you and told that you are Foster parents. She had been told about a 7 year old boy and his baby sister who was not quite 2 and told us that their current foster family was giving up due to ill health but the children’s case was going to court in July, where a judge would decide whether they would be put up for adoption or not. If we were to foster them and all went well and if they were going to be adopted then we could be in a good position to adopt them (even though it could not be guaranteed). The social worker sent through their photo’s and when I saw what is now our Son’s photo I just knew once our little girls photo was sent, I was sure these could be our children..
Three weeks later (15th May) they moved in with us, so that was nearly four years ago, wow I have experienced every emotion since then! It has been the biggest roller coaster ride but I would not change things, even though I would like more sleep!
Bye for now,
